Tudor Challenge 2022

Welcome to the inaugural Tudor Challenge 2022

This invitation is open to:

Any fixed seat traditional style boat or traditional-style replica, powered by a minimum of four oars.

Sliding seat craft will not be accepted for entry to the race.

The Course

The course, weather permitting, will be a route of about 10 miles within the harbour using permanent marker buoys and other markers. The race is timed around high tide so there are no water depth issues for any part of the circuit. Should there be poor weather/high winds on the day, the route may be switched to a shorter one based on the first half of the original route.

Full details of the course will be given at the pre race briefing on the day of the race.

Race Categories

The race categories are still under development. Once we have more information on numbers and type of vessel we can expect at the race we will expand the selection of categories and let you know. At the time of writing and to allow you to consider your teams, you can expect there to be trophies for the following Challenges:

A) Fastest overall around the course (with handicap)

B) Fastest women’s team around the course (with handicap)

C) Fastest Veterans team (each rower must be 55 years of age or over)

D) Fastest Veterans women’s team (each rower must be 55 years of age or over)

E) Fastest Boat in each class i.e Pilot Gig, Solent Galley, Bursledon, (further categories will be created when two or more of a particular boat class enter).

Trophies

Trophies are returnable unless otherwise stated. We encourage everyone who wins a trophy to return in 2023 to defend it, but if you cannot make 2023, please ensure it is returned to TSC before the next race date. Thank you.

Arrival Information

The Tudor Challenge will be held at Tudor Sailing Club, Eastern Road, PO11 0NH

Boats and crews can arrive from 07:00 at the Club on the 13th August 2022.

There will be marshals to greet you as you arrive by road or water and assist you in parking / mooring.

 After parking / mooring, boat captains are to make themselves known to the event registration / coordinating shore side manager – Jane Dare who will be based in the Tudor Sailing clubhouse.

Boat event numbers will be issued at this time and final information on meeting for the pre-race briefing.

Beverages and food will be available from our clubhouse from 08:00 13th August 2022.

Showers and changing facilities are also available in the clubhouse.

Cox and Crew Notes

The coxswains and crew briefing will be at 10:15am in the clubhouse. Please ensure you arrive in plenty of time to attend this briefing.

 At the start of the Race

Boats will be set off in short intervals. Please ensure your team is ready to go. Please aim to be at the start in number order. Boats arriving early to the start line will be held back.

Race Start Time - 11:00AM

Approximate time to finish – 2 hours

Handicap starting times will be issued to all teams prior to August 13th and during the pre-race briefing.

 After the Race

As you approach the finish line, please ensure your number is visible to the race officers. If a race number is not visible it could affect your final position.

After crossing the finish line please return to the area you waited in at the start to avoid congestion in the finish area.

Boats can be moored while you enjoy the BBQ and refreshments or you can recover them from the water.

Prize giving will take place once all the competitors have completed the race.

 Race Fee

The entry fee for the race will be £10.00 per rower. This fee will include a free drink from the bar during your visit. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options are available to choose from. A voucher for your drink will be given to you when you register your arrival and collect your race number. Once you have completed and submitted your entry form an email will be sent to you with information on how to pay for the race.

Please note that Langstone Harbour Board has leisure vessel charges and you are responsible for ensuring you have paid any due as appropriate.

 Regulations and Eligibility

The freeboard of individual entries will be examined by the Race Scrutineers and Safety Marshals, who may exclude any entry on safety grounds before or during the event.

 Safety reviews can result in rule amendments. Please read the Guidance Notes,

Notice to Coxes (distributed on race day) and all other communications carefully, particularly those sections referring to signals. Please pay particular attention to the Start Layout and Start Guide (distributed on race day). These instructions are mandatory, and the coxswain of each vessel is responsible for adhering to them. Every crew MUST confirm its final, accurate crew complement to Registration before going afloat.

· Every boat must be covered by public liability insurance up to £2 million for any one claim and for any loss, injury or damage to property or persons, including all persons aboard the craft.

· Sufficient buoyancy aids are to be carried for all persons aboard. Coxswains must wear buoyancy aids / lifejackets at all times in the boat.

· Each boat must fly a flag (minimum of 3ft x 2ft) throughout the race. This flag must not carry advertising slogans.

· Each boat must carry a fully charged working VHF radio set to channel 8.

· Each boat must have a method of bailing water from their boat.

· Tow lines must be secured to the bow and stern of the boat. Any towing will be undertaken at the boat owner's risk.

· The minimum age for any person aboard is 18 years.

· All boats must complete an Entry form & self certification of seaworthiness. This is to be signed by skipper / Cox / legally responsible person on registration.

· Private support boats or spectator boats must keep clear of boats racing.

· Mixed crews must have at least 50% women rowing at all times.

· In addition to the rowers, each boat must at all times carry a coxswain (who need not steer but must not row while coxing). Crew and coxswain may freely change positions during the race. No substitution or assistance is permitted. Any

crew member going ashore during the race will render their crew liable to immediate disqualification and withdrawal from safety cover.

· Instructions on what to do in the event of a fire or other emergency while on TSC premises will be issued on race day, but for information the designated rendezvous point will be the playing field across from the clubhouse.
